Washworld
A downloadable game for Windows
There is a rock, and on top of the rock there is a car park, and in the car park there is a coin laundry. It is open. The lights are on. Nobody has explained any of this and nothing in the game is going to.
At the edge of the lot there is a portal, and crates of somebody else's washing keep falling out of it. That is the job. Carry a crate inside, empty it into your arms, load a washer, put a coin in. Dry it. Fold it. Put it all back in the crate and leave the crate on the lit pad by the portal.
The portal waits — just long enough that you start to think it has not noticed — then yanks the crate through and pays you by firing the coins at the tarmac around your feet.
Then you go outside and have a cigarette.

**Things that happen while you are standing still**
An airliner crosses, very high up, in silhouette against the stars. It is a commercial airliner. A long way off, something is fighting something else: a scatter of moving dots and the occasional flash, no sound, no outcome. And sometimes a flying-saucer diner comes down into the car park, puts its hazards on, plays a jingle, sits there for a minute, and leaves.
**The smoke break is the mechanic.** Light one and the sky is three times busier.
That is the whole game in a sentence: it pays you for stopping.
---
**What is in it**
- One asteroid you can walk all the way around. Gravity points at its middle, except over the car park, which is flat, so the tarmac stays level under you.
- A laundromat with twenty-two working machines — twelve washers, seven dryers, three folding tables — plus carts you can wheel a load around in.
- Washing that is individual garments with individual states, and crates that pile up in the car park at a rate you cannot keep up with. That pile is the difficulty curve.
- Six tracks. Inside, a cheap ceiling speaker plays lounge exotica; step outside and it is gone mid-bar, replaced by a very slow pad. The door is a mute button.
- Save and load a shift whenever you like.
**What is not in it yet**
No shift, no closing time, no score. Nothing can go wrong, so this is still a toy rather than a game — a good one to potter in for half an hour, and honest about being early.
